Self-Collection PCR Swab Test
Medwyn Occupational Health is offering a private COVID-19 self-testing kit for those individuals or require the security of an efficient test result service.
What will the PCR test tell me
This test will check for current COVID-19 infection and tell you if you are currently infected. The PCR test is 99.9% sensitive at detecting COVID-19.
For the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) information and guidance, please visit https://nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19.
How does it work
The PCR test detects the genetic material in the virus called RNA. When the sample reaches the lab, a solution known as a ‘reagent’ is added to it. If there is virus present this reagent starts a ‘chain reaction’ and creates billions of copies of the genetic material in the virus so that there is enough that it can be detected and analysed by scientists to provide a positive result. This test is also known as an RNA, genetic, molecular, viral detection or swab test.
Can the test be done at home
Yes – the simple self-testing kit involves taking a swab from the inside of your nose and the back of your throat, using a long cotton bud. Your self-testing kit will include:
- Swab and collection tube
- Test request form
- Biohazard plastic bag return packaging
- 24 Hour Royal Mail Tracked delivery to our UK Government and UKAS accredited laboratory, providing you with the confidence and reassurance of a high-quality testing service.
How long do results take
The turnaround time is officially 48 hours from receiving your swab in the lab. Swab tests are processed in a UKAS accredited laboratory, providing you with the confidence and assurance of a high-quality testing service.
Please be aware that the laboratory is required by the UK Government to report both positive and negative PCR test results to Public Health England in line with current guidance. If you test COVID-19 positive your personal information will automatically be shared with the NHS Track & Trace service.
