Self-Testing PCR Swab Test
Due to the current demand for NHS coronavirus (COVID-19) tests, lack of testing capacity and delays in receiving results, Medwyn Occupational Health is offering a private COVID-19 self-testing kit.
What will the PCR test tell me
This test will check for current COVID-19 infection and tell you if you are currently infected.
For the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) information and guidance, please visit https://nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19.
How does it work
The PCR test detects the genetic material in the virus called RNA. When the sample reaches the lab, a solution known as a ‘reagent’ is added to it. If there is virus present this reagent starts a ‘chain reaction’ and creates billions of copies of the genetic material in the virus so that there is enough that it can be detected and analysed by scientists to provide a positive result. This test is also known as an RNA, genetic, molecular, viral detection or swab test.
Can the test be done at home
Yes – the simple self-testing kit involves taking a swab from the inside of your nose and the back of your throat, using a long cotton bud. Your self-testing kit will include:
- Swab and collection tube
- Test request form
- Introduction letter and instructions
- Biohazard plastic bag
- Prepaid return envelope
How long do results take
The laboratory turnaround time is officially 48 hours from receiving your swab in the lab. Swab tests are processed in a UKAS accredited laboratory, providing you with the confidence and assurance of a high-quality testing service.
Please be aware that the laboratory is currently processing high numbers of requests and as a result there may occasionally be a delay in results being sent to us. We cannot refund any costs should the results be delayed due to circumstances outside of our control.
Request your self-testing kit available at Medwyn Occupational Health’s clinic based in Dorking, Surrey, or via our postage service.
A member of the team will contact you within 3 working hours, or you can telephone us on 01306 873942 or 01306 873936.
