Fit to Travel PCR test
What is a Fit to Travel PCR test?
Before you leave the UK it is mandatory to have a Covid-19 test. The test can either be a PCR or an antigen test though you should consult Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office website to ensure which is the entry requirement for your destination. You can book antigen tests here: https://medwynoh.co.uk/covid-antigen-travel-tests/.
We also recommend that you check the time in which you are required to take your test, which is typically between 48 and 72 hours. You should also check whether the number of hours is from the time of departure or arrival as this makes a significant difference.
Do I need a PCR test come back from to the UK and how do I arrange one?
No, antigen tests taken within 48 hours of your return are widely accepted for the return to the UK, but we do recommend that you confirm this by visiting the https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/foreign-commonwealth-office website.
Before you leave the UK Medwyn can arrange delivery (or you can collect during your fit to travel PCR test appointment) of rapid antigen tests and arrange a video appointment for you to take the tests whilst away.
A trained technician will walk you through the process, check the result and issue a certificate for your return trip. Book you antigen test kits HERE .
Is there a minimum age for taking a PCR test?
The minimum age for a PCR test does vary by destination. For example for travel to Spain no PCR test is required for children under 12 years but for Italy it is under 6 years. We do recommend you check this on the the Foreign Office pages.
How is a PCR test taken?
A PCR test involves inserting a thin, flexible swab stick with a cotton tip into your mouth and nose in order to sample the presence of Coronavirus. The swab is rotated several times in both before being withdrawn and it is then sealed in a tube to be sent to a lab for analysis. This can be somewhat uncomfortable and varying levels of discomfort may exist for up to 24 hours.
In all cases our trained clinicians will talk through the process and any concerns you have.
The Medwyn Covid Team are also equipped with swabs suitable for children.
