Medwyn Occupational Health is now offering the COVID-19 Abbott and Roche antibody tests.

This highly-reliable antibody test can tell if you have been previously infected with COVID-19, even in people who have not had symptoms of the virus.

Abbott confirmed on 20th May 2020, that its antibody test is not intended for home use and should not be conducted with a finger stick blood sample.

Test is accurate from 14 days or more after your COVID-19 symptoms began

The Abbott test has ONLY been validated for use with a venous blood sample taken by a healthcare provider

What will the Antibody test tell me

Unlike the PCR swab test, the antibody test is not used to detect if you are currently infected with coronavirus. It is used to identify a previous infection that has triggered a response from your immune system, leaving antibodies behind in the blood.

How does it work

The COVID-19 antibody test helps to detect the IgG antibody that the body produces in the later stages of infection and which remains for months and possibly years after a person has recovered. However, COVID-19 is a new disease, so we do not yet confidently know how long antibodies against the virus will last. It also remains unknown whether presence of antibodies confers immunity against COVID-19.

How is the antibody test done

A blood sample is taken at Medwyn Occupational Health’s clinic based in Dorking, Surrey. This method of collection has been approved by the test manufacturers.

Is the test safe and accurate

Researchers found the Abbott test to have a 99.9% specificity and 100% sensitivity when conducted by healthcare professionals. Our lab is UKAS accredited – providing you with the confidence and assurance of a high-quality testing service.

When should I take the test

The antibody test can be taken 14 days or more after your COVID-19 symptoms began.  If it is taken sooner than 14 days the test result could be negative even if you have been infected with COVID-19.

Evidence from the recent Cochrane review indicates antibody testing is most accurate when a blood sample is taken between 14-35 days after symptom onset
