Covid-19 antibody blood test - Roche antibody spike test

This test can tell if you have been previously infected with COVID-19, even in people who have not had symptoms of the virus – it’s estimated that around 20% of individuals may fall into this category.

It can also confirm whether you have developed an immune response to COVID-19 vaccination.

What will the antibody test tell me

Unlike the PCR swab test, the antibody test is not used to detect if you are currently infected with coronavirus. It is used to identify a previous infection that has triggered a response from your immune system, leaving antibodies behind in the blood.

The new Roche Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S test can quantitatively measure the level of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in patients who have been vaccinated against or exposed to the virus. This means both the presence and level of antibodies is measured and can signal the strength of an immune response to the virus. Other COVID-19 antibody tests only provide a ‘positive’ or ‘negative’ result.

The Roche antibody test is currently used in global pharmaceutical clinical trials to confirm vaccine efficacy – the majority of current vaccines aim to induce an antibody response against the spike protein which can be measured by this test.

The test targets antibodies against the nucleocapsid and receptor binding domain spike antigen protein.

When and how is the antibody test done

Blood samples should be taken 14 days or later after infection or date of vaccination.

IgG antibody levels can be detected for months and possibly years after a person has recovered from infection. However, this is a new disease, so we do not yet confidently know how long antibodies against the virus will last. It also remains unknown whether presence of antibodies confers long-term immunity against COVID-19.

A blood sample can be taken at Medwyn Occupational Health’s clinic based in Dorking, Surrey. Or, you can request a self-collection blood sampling kit that is posted to your home address. Both methods of collection have  been approved by the test manufacturers. The sample is then sent to our UKAS accredited lab and results are available after 24 hours.

Is the test safe and accurate

The test is CE and MHRA approved.

Researchers found the Roche Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S test shows 99.8% sensitivity (true positives) and 99.8% specificity (true negatives) for blood samples taken 14 days or later after infection or date of vaccination.

Our lab is UKAS (ISO 15189) accredited – providing you with the confidence and assurance of a high-quality testing service. Access the scientific evidence for this test.

When should I take the test

Evidence from the recent Cochrane Review indicates antibody testing is most accurate when a blood sample is taken between 14 to 35 days after symptoms, although antibodies may remain for many months.
